Film locations in Xagħra

Xagħra is a village on a plateau in northeast Gozo, home to the Ġgantija temples. Below it lies Ramla Bay, the red-sand beach used by Coronation Street in 2007 and, reportedly, by the BBC's Byron.

Xagħra spreads across a plateau above Gozo's north coast. It's known for the Ġgantija temples, among the oldest free-standing buildings in the world, and for its large church square. To the north the land drops into the valley that runs down to Ramla Bay (Ir-Ramla l-Ħamra), the biggest and most photographed sandy beach on Gozo. The beach falls within Xagħra's boundaries. Film crews come to Ramla for its orange-red sand, dunes and undeveloped backdrop, which can pass for anywhere in the Mediterranean. Coronation Street filmed Eileen Grimshaw paddling here in 2007. The Madame Blanc Mysteries uses a Xagħra villa as Jean's cottage, but it's a private holiday rental. Route 302 runs from Victoria to Ramla.
