About Republic Square
Republic Square opens off Republic Street in the centre of Valletta, with a marble statue of Queen Victoria in the middle, the arcades of Caffe Cordina on one side and the National Library of Malta, the Bibliotheca, closing it off at the back. Its outdoor tables make it one of the city's most popular café spots. In Munich, Spielberg used the square as a terrace café in 'Rome', where the Mossad team leader Avner meets fellow agents as they plan their operations. With a few period cars and costumes, the library façade and the café umbrellas convincingly suggest Italy in the early 1970s. Today the square looks much the same: grab a coffee under the umbrellas, look up at the library's columns and you're sitting in the shot.
Best time to go
Mid-morning coffee, before the lunchtime crowds.
