About Għajn Tuffieħa Bay

Għajn Tuffieħa is a horseshoe of reddish sand framed by clay slopes and cliffs on Malta's north-west coast, reached by a staircase of around 200 steps and sitting right next to the more developed Golden Bay. A 17th-century watchtower, built by the Order of St John in 1637, guards the headland above. In Troy, the bay is the Trojan shore where Achilles (Brad Pitt) and the Greek fleet come ashore and storm the beach, with Golden Bay appearing in the background of several shots. A travel guide also places Napoleon's exile on 'Elba' at Għajn Tuffieħa Tower for Ridley Scott's Napoleon. The bay is now protected and popular with swimmers; in summer there are sunbeds and a kiosk, but no buildings on the beach itself.

Best time to go

Sunset, when the sun drops into the sea straight in front of the bay; mornings for quiet swims.
