About Mġarr ix-Xini

Mġarr ix-Xini is a deep, steep-sided inlet on Gozo's southern coast between Xewkija and Sannat, with a small pebble beach at its head, clear water for swimming and snorkelling, and a 1661 watchtower guarding the mouth. In By the Sea, it becomes a quiet resort on the 1970s French coast: the production built a small hotel, a seaside café and a shop around the inlet, where Vanessa and Roland (Jolie and Pitt) spend their stay. Most of the film was shot here. The sets were temporary and the bay is back to its natural state, with only a small seasonal restaurant at the shore. It's one of the most peaceful swimming spots on Gozo, and the walk to the tower gives views out to Comino and Malta.

Best time to go
