Was The Odyssey filmed in Malta?

Yes. Malta is one of the countries where Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey was filmed, during a shoot that ran from February to August 2025 and also took in Morocco, Greece, Italy, Scotland, Iceland and Western Sahara. What hasn't been confirmed is where in Malta. Neither the studio nor the Malta Film Commission has named a site, so there's no Odyssey pin on our map yet.

What's confirmed

Wikipedia, The Times and Dark Horizons' wrap report all list Malta among the filming countries. None of them names a specific place.

What's only reported

  • Malta Film Studios water tanks, Kalkara: Some reports say underwater and ocean-battle scenes were shot in the tanks. The Malta Independent puts it as 'reportedly', and no production source confirms it. The tanks have been used by sea films for decades, but the studios aren't open to visitors.
  • Calypso's Cave, Gozo: One outlet says the cave above Ramla Bay was used for Calypso's island. Another report says Calypso's island was filmed in Dakhla, Western Sahara, and the cave itself has been closed for safety for years. We treat this one as unlikely.

Odyssey places you can see in Malta anyway

Local tradition has long linked Gozo with Ogygia, the island of the nymph Calypso in Homer's Odyssey, and Calypso's Cave is named after her. The viewpoint above Ramla Bay looks down over the red-sand beach.

  • Ramla Bay: the beach below Calypso's Cave, used by Coronation Street and Byron
