Victoria, which locals still call Rabat, is Gozo's hilltop capital, crowned by the Citadel. Coronation Street, The Madame Blanc Mysteries and other British productions have filmed in its squares and lanes.

Victoria sits in the middle of Gozo, and every bus route on the island starts here. The old town fans out below the Cittadella, a fortified hilltop with the cathedral, museums and views over the whole island. At its foot is It-Tokk (Independence Square), the main square with the round-fronted Banca Giuratale and a daily market. St Francis Square and the narrow shopping lanes around them have stood in for French market towns and Mediterranean holiday spots. Coronation Street filmed its 2007 Gozo episodes here, and The Madame Blanc Mysteries uses Victoria's streets for Jean's antique shop and the Sainte Victoire museum. Allow half a day to walk the Citadel and the old lanes. Mornings are quietest; by mid-afternoon many shops close for a long lunch.
