About Dock No. 1
Dock No. 1 is the oldest dry dock of the former Malta Dockyard, cut into the rock at the head of Dockyard Creek in Cospicua (Bormla), the largest of the Three Cities. Once the heart of the Royal Navy's Mediterranean base, it has since been regenerated as a waterfront square and promenade surrounded by the old dockyard buildings and Bormla's houses. In Munich, Spielberg used the old dock as the 'Beirut' dockside where the Mossad team lands for the raid in which three Palestinian targets are killed, with the industrial quays and stone warehouses giving the scene a gritty 1970s port feel. Today it's a quiet public space with benches, views down the creek to Birgu and Senglea, and a few cafés, far less visited than the waterfronts next door.
Best time to go
Golden hour, when the dock walls and creek glow.
