About The Citadel (Cittadella), Victoria
The Cittadella crowns the hill at the centre of Gozo. People lived up here from the Bronze Age, and the Knights rebuilt the walls after the Ottoman raid of 1551. Inside the bastions are the Baroque Cathedral of the Assumption, which has a famous painted 'dome' on a flat ceiling, plus the Old Prison, the Gran Castello Historic House and a visitor centre. The walls give 360-degree views over Gozo. In Coronation Street's 2007 holiday episodes, Steve McDonald and Eileen Grimshaw were filmed bickering on the broad stone steps in front of the cathedral, and the special opening titles showed the Citadel's church. Nothing was built for the shoot, so the square and steps look the same today. Entering the Citadel itself is free.
