Assassin's Creed
Merchants Street
In Maltese: Triq il-Merkanti
Merchants Street, the long market street parallel to Republic Street in Valletta, was dressed with sand, carts and stalls as 15th-century Spain for the parkour rooftop chase in Assassin's Creed (2016), filmed from late summer 2015.
What was filmed at Merchants Street?
Assassin's Creed (2016)
The street, covered in sand and filled with stalls and carts, is where Aguilar and Maria's parkour chase runs through the crowds before going up onto the rooftops. It played 15th-century Seville.
About Merchants Street
Merchants Street runs parallel to Republic Street through the heart of Valletta, lined with Baroque palazzi, shops and the restored 19th-century market hall, Is-Suq tal-Belt, which is now a food hall. For Assassin's Creed the art department turned it into a street of Inquisition-era Spain: road signs were covered with fabric, the paving was buried under sand, and the street was filled with stalls, carts and extras. Aguilar (Michael Fassbender) and Maria run and leap through the crowds here and up onto Valletta's rooftops, a chase that ends on the roof of the Basilica of St Dominic at the far end of the street. Today it's a busy everyday street with a morning market on its upper section, cafés and the food hall, and a nice, less crowded alternative to Republic Street.
Best time to go
Early morning, before the shops and market open, when the street looks most like the empty set.
